Portland Schools – How do you choose?
So, last night a client asked me about schools, which ones were better than others etc. and I realized that I know of course about the schools that I have attended but where would I choose to send my child now? Currently my child is only 2 years old so I won’t be seriously faced with that decision for a couple of years but those years will go by quickly, I can feel it. Anyway, I started doing some research on schools in the area and how they are rated. There is a lot of information at the Portland Public Schools site about which school your child will go to per neighborhood zoning. It explains how to transfer to a different school if the one in your zone is not the one you would like your child to go to. The PPS sit however does not just flat out rank the schools based on test scores, it is a little bit of work to look at each schools graphs and see where they place and at this moment I have not done that for every school, that might be a future blog post, I will let you know. There is also a site that takes testing information along with parent feedback and rates schools, even charter and private schools. This parent rating makes me a little suspicious because how many parents would publicly bad mouth the school that their kid goes to? Well, the site had a couple. Then there is also a public school ranking site that gives you data from 2003 without charge but if you want current data you have to pay them money (strange to me, what are they trying to hide?). Their old data concludes that SW Portland tops the list, then inner NE and SE, N Portland was towards the end and some outter SE schools bottomed out. I will update more current info once I have it and more on charter schools too since I am leaning that way for the future but need more info.
Something that is newer (to me) that I found with the Portland Public Schools is that a handful of elementary and middle schools have merged to one building like Vestal and Bridger in Montavilla, making them K-8. Also, Fernwood middle school is now called the Beverly Cleary School and is K-8, how cool I love Ramona Quimby!
